Parallel lines are the lines that never meet each other, no matter how long we extend them. Parallel lines have different y-intercepts and have no points in common. Therefore, any line that is parallel to y = 4x + 3 will have the same slope, that is, 4. For example, if the slope of a line with the equation y = 4x + 3 is 4. It should be noted that the slope of any two parallel lines is always the same. The value of 'm' determines the slope or gradient and tells us how steep the line is. The equation of a straight line is generally written in the slope-intercept form represented by the equation, y = mx + b, where 'm' is the slope and 'b' is the y-intercept. There were public entertainments such as the dancing girls of Champagne and all kinds of performing street artists as well as a few more unsavoury aspects such as gambling and prostitution that gave the fairs a poor reputation with the Church. People usually had to travel more than a day to reach their nearest fair and so they would stay one or two days in the many taverns and inns which developed around them. Not only did the fairs of Champagne become famed across Europe but they were a great boost to the international reputation of Champagne wine (at that time still not the sparkling drink that Dom Pérignon would pioneer in the 17th century CE).įor many ordinary people, fairs anywhere were a great highlight of the year. Some of these fairs lasted up to 49 days and brought in a healthy revenue to the Counts such was their importance, French kings even guaranteed to protect merchants travelling to and from the fairs. Traders of wool, cloth, spices, wine, and all manner of other goods gathered from across France and even came from abroad, notably from Flanders, Spain, England, and Italy. The fairs which were held in June and October in Troyes, May and September in Saint Ayoul, at Lent in Bar-sur-Aube, and in January at Lagny were encouraged by the Counts of Champagne who also provided policing services and paid the salaries of the army of officials who supervised the fairs. Fairs boomed in France, England, Flanders, and Germany in the 12th and 13th centuries CE, with one of the most famous areas for them being the Champagne region of France. Prices also tended to be cheaper because there was more competition between sellers of specific items. Trade fairs were large-scale sales events typically held annually in large towns where people could find a greater range of goods than they might find in their more local market and traders could buy goods wholesale. As a consequence of this clustering of trades, many streets acquired a name which described the trade most represented in them, names which in many cases still survive today. ![]() Towns also had banks and money-lenders, many of which were Jews as usury was forbidden to Christians by the Church. Those trades which involved goods whose quality was absolutely vital such as goldsmiths and armourers were usually located near a town council's administration buildings where they could be kept a close eye on by regulators. Sometimes location was directly related to the goods on sale such as horse sellers typically being near the city gates so as to tempt the passing traveller or booksellers near a cathedral and its associated schools of learning. In cities, shops selling the same type of goods were often clustered together in the same neighbourhoods, again to increase competition and make the life of city and guild inspectors easier. ![]() Tradespeople usually lived above their shop which presented a large window onto the street with a stall projecting out from under a wooden canopy. In towns, the consumer had, besides markets, the additional option of shops. Besides markets, sellers of wares also went knocking on the doors of private homes, and these were known as hucksters. There were middlemen and women known as regrators who bought goods from producers and sold them on to the market stallholders or producers might pay a vendor to sell their goods for them. Sellers of meat and bread tended to be men, but women stallholders were often the majority, and they sold such staples as eggs, dairy products, poultry, and ale. ![]() Sellers of particular goods, who paid an estate owner, the town, or borough council a fee for the privilege to have a stall, were typically set next to each other in areas so that competition was kept high. Typically held once or twice a week, larger towns might have a daily market which moved around different parts of the city depending on the day or have markets for specific goods like meat, fish, or bread. ![]() Markets were also organised just outside many castles and monasteries. In villages, towns, and large cities which had been granted the privilege of a license to do so by their monarch, markets were regularly held in public squares (or sometimes triangles), in wide streets or even in purpose-built halls. The shading of the surface is computed using traditional 3D computer graphics shading models. The simplifying assumption is made that if a surface faces a light, the light will reach that surface and not be blocked or in shadow. Using the material properties and the effect of the lights in the scene, this algorithm can determine the shading of this object. This is then the object the eye normally sees through that pixel. The idea behind ray casting is to shoot rays from the eye, one per pixel, and find the closest object blocking the path of that ray - think of an image as a screen-door, with each square in the screen being a pixel. ![]() The first ray casting (versus ray tracing) algorithm used for rendering was presented by Arthur Appel in 1968. Attempting to simulate this real-world process of tracing light rays using a computer can be considered extremely wasteful, as only a minuscule fraction of the rays in a scene would actually reach the eye. Some of these rays travel in such a way that they hit our eye, causing us to see the scene and so contribute to the final rendered image. From here, the reflected and/or refracted rays may strike other surfaces, where their absorptive, refractive, and reflective properties are again calculated based on the incoming rays. A surface cannot, for instance, reflect 66% of an incoming light ray, and refract 50%, since the two would add up to be 116%. Between absorption, reflection, and refraction, all of the incoming light must be accounted for, and no more. If the surface has any transparent or translucent properties, it refracts a portion of the light beam into itself in a different direction while absorbing some (or all) of the spectrum (and possibly altering the color). It might also absorb part of the light ray, resulting in a loss of intensity of the reflected and/or refracted light. A surface may reflect all or part of the light ray, in one or more directions. In reality, any combination of three things might happen with this light ray: absorption, reflection, and refraction. In a perfect vacuum this ray will be a straight line. ![]() One can think of this "ray" as a stream of photons travelling along the same path. In nature, a light source emits a ray of light which travels, eventually, to a surface that interrupts its progress. After a stipulated number of maximum reflections has occured, the light intensity of the point of last intersection is estimated using a number of algorithms, which may include the classic rendering algorithm, and may perhaps incorporate other techniques such as radiosity.ĭetailed description of ray tracing computer algorithm and its genesis What happens in nature The obvious shortcut is to pre-suppose that the ray ends up at the viewpoint, then trace backwards. A computer simulation starting with the rays emitted by the light source and looking for ones which wind up intersecting the viewpoint is not practically feasible to execute and obtain accurate imagery. Scenes in raytracing are described mathematically, usually by a programmer, or by a visual artist using intermediary tools, but they may also incorporate data from images and models captured by various technological means, for instance digital photography.įollowing rays in reverse is many orders of magnitude more efficient at building up the visual information than would be a genuine simulation of light interactions, since the overwhelming majority of light rays from a given light source do not wind up providing significant light to the viewers eye, but instead may bounce around until they diminish to almost nothing, or bounce off into the infinite. The ray's reflection, refraction, or absorption are calculated when it intersects objects and media in the scene. As the scene is traversed by following in reverse the path of a very large number of such rays, visual information on the appearance of the scene as viewed from the point of view of the camera, and in lighting conditions specified to the software, is built up. It works by tracing in reverse, a path that could have been taken by a ray of light which would intersect the imaginary camera lens. This is called Ray tracing describes a more realistic method than either ray casting or scanline rendering, for producing visual images constructed in 3D computer graphics environments. But it’s the way the subject matter is handled and represented that really troubles me. On the basis that the game takes place almost entirely via phone conversation, which has the player simply watching dialogue on the screen, waiting for a conversation to finish before they know what to do, where to go.I get it, you play a game with a title like this then it might be fair to expect a pretty dark and unsettling experience.Īnd if that doesn’t give it away, the disclaimer that pops up before the game starts should be an even bigger clue. However this game is, technically speaking, not a great game at all. ![]() It is rare that games like this can be both macabre, unpredictable – especially at the end and yet wholly enjoyable as a story. This game is a complete mind fudge, and an exceptional story and great take on this kind of game play. The ending reveals the truth, the motives, the who what where and when and the finale. The story of Rachel Foster will reveal itself, but it is likely that the player as well as the player character will get more than they bargained for. The story itself is winding, the hotel has a living presence and movement all of its own making, and at times the player character is in control and at times she seems to be and as the player will be – along for the ride. (Oh, and you absolutely must calibrate the brightness/contrast as directed, otherwise that’s cheating!) It isn’t long before that feeling of anxiety can creep into and overwhelm the player, seriously. It grows further with the phone call, the monologue from the player character and the level of her anxiety rising. The lighting, the grandeur of the hotel and the constant tension and apprehension start the process of the mind fudge. Unless there are specific reasons that this kind of content is more likely to affect the player, this game is unlikely to harm a person in any way, don’t stress, and make smart choices. So this game is perhaps not appropriate for young players, although the average teenager is likely to have a firm understanding of these concepts through education, films and media etc. Paraphrased, it warns that the game deals with themes of death and grooming. This game comes with a serious warning at the start. That is essentially it it is simple for anyone to play, including those with mobility concerns. This feature also only gets introduced part-way into the first part of the game which is almost equally annoying.įinally, the player can look at objects, notable items contain a label on screen and actionable items can be activated with the ‘A’ button. The character can also ‘run’ however this should be considered to be a 15% speed increase at best, it is so much so, that the temptation to demand more from the controller than it is willing to give is strong in this game. ![]() The bulk of the dialog and gameplay takes place via a phone call, which seems odd, but it is a useful story telling device. Now it is odd however that the polaroid is used for just one day and perhaps all of 10 minutes at most.Ĭhristmas eve. The character ends up with three inventory items, a dynamo flashlight, a Polaroid camera and parabolic shotgun microphone, because – reasons. The story of the game forces the player character to start to look deeper into the suicide of Rachel Foster as well as analyse and assess the character of the players’ father. In a sense there is a similar play style to The Stanley Parable, although it is more linear in its nature and certainly does not reset or screw with your mind – in that respect.Įach of the 9 phases of the game is broken up into a single day, occurring over Christmas, take note of that because it is the first level of mind fudging (and replace fudging with a similar word you use when you accidentally hammer your fingers).Įach day involves some kind of problem to solve, which start out with the practicalities but soon escalate to some serious mind fudging. This game takes place entirely inside the hotel, and at each stage the player character is free to explore the entire hotel, the painting on the wall and every other minutia of rendered detail. With strictly business on her mind, she must inspect the hotel as part of the process of selling it, until the phone rings. This leads the player to the hotel she now owns, where the horrible events took place having not been there since, this is just a dreaded reminder for the player character, one that she would rather forget.
